When it comes to improving education in our schools, typically there are several perspectives of what things are needed and what things are not at school sites.
Parents will often declare some programs are more effective than other programs at their child’s Parent Teacher Association meeting, while Students will utilize Student Government Associations/ Student Councils to voice their concerns. While the students and parents may have the best intentions, rarely are parents and students in the same dialogue as it relates to their own school. Promoting dialogue between Students and Parents is one of the reasons for hosting The 1st Inter-Generational Governance Summit.

The above analogy is pretty common with schools that at least have Student Government Associations/Parent Teacher Associations and Alumni Associations functioning. However, many schools do not have these basic school-based organizations functioning. Which means, its even more difficult to get everyone on the same page. Promoting ALL SCHOOLS to have functioning Student Government Associations, Parent Teacher Associations and Alumni Associations, is the second reason we are hosting The Inter-Generational Governance Summit on May 4th at Oakland’s City Hall.

Above, I mentioned the lack of communication between these school based organizations, when they do function at school sites. The third reason for hosting The Inter-Generational Governance is to promote the collaboration of these organizations to fill in this gap.

The vision to fill in this gap is called Familyhood. According to David N. Roach, co-founder of The Familyhood Connection Inc, a 501 (c) (3) corporation in the State of California, Familyhood is driven by two motto’s. 1) every school shall have a functioning Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association and 2) every school shall have a garden, a farmers market and a grocery store.

This collaboration, Student Government Association (SGA) + Parent Teacher Association (PTA) + Alumni Associations (AA) equals what we call Familyhood.

A “Familyhood governance” is our vision at every school site.

The “do now” strategy to attain Familyhood is called 1st Saturdays.

1st Saturdays represents the first Saturday of every month as the official monthly volunteer/recruitment day at schools.

Schools add their school site on 1stSaturdays.com as a location to host this monthly volunteer / recruitment day in their community.

During these monthly volunteer day events, updates from each organization are part of the agenda (if they have the organization(s) functioning. If the school does not have a Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association or Alumni Association in existence, they share updates on next steps to have them established at their school.

Familyhood is a community development strategy that utilizes schools as the center for community development and empowers all the generations connected to the school as the stewards of this development.

To illustrate the role of each and how they are connected, all students should gain hands -on training in democracy through their Student Government Association.

When these students graduate and become an Alumni, these students should return to the school as Alumni and mentor the next generation of Student leaders.
