1st Saturdays represents the 1st Saturday of each month to volunteer in schools
1st Saturdays is the "do now" strategy to advance a school and its community towards Familyhood. Familyhood is a systemic approach of building healthy, sustainable, communities from the people up!

1st Saturdays is a monthly day to recruit members, community partners, etc to join the schools/community development
1st Saturdays, being a monthly day to reconvene at a school enables the schools inter-generational populations, i.e. students, parents, alumni, community partners to share resources/updates and strategies for collaboration.

1st Saturdays is a monthly step towards a schools long-term goals
Familyhood is a vision that is driven by two mottoes: 1) "Every school shall have a functioning Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association and 2) Every school shall have a garden, a farmers market and a grocery store." These long-term goals are suggested steps to advance towards each month through 1st Saturdays

1st Saturdays.com promotes the first Saturday of each month as the official monthly volunteer/recruitment day at school sites.

1st Saturdays is also the “do now” strategy to advance a school towards the long-term goal of building Familyhood.

Familyhood is driven by two mottoes: “every school shall have a functioning Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association.” In essence, these organizations along with Community Partners or Friends is the school’s Familyhood.

Motto 2 aka Mo’ Better Food ) Every school shall have a garden, a farmers market and a grocery store.

In essence, these “school -based enterprises” improve the communities food system, while giving the students experiential learning projects improving their food system.

Why

Why? Because education should be equal for all children!

Knowing the impact parents, alumni and adults can have for a students educational experience, why do some school have them and some do not?

Typically, schools in under-served communities, suffer from food insecurity and employment opportunities from within their community.

We believe a monthly volunteer day at school sites can increase collaboration within a school, improve a school physically and enable students a hands-on opportunity to engage with their surrounding community by improving their community.

We also believe these monthly  volunteer days are opportunities for schools to check-in with its three main school-based organizations, i.e. Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association.

Each year, communities gather to volunteer to improve their community.
Think of 1st Saturdays as 11 additional days a year (once a month/ no January) to not only volunteer, but to grow the schools capacity to advance closer to its longer-term goals.

Familyhood is a vision of growing a schools capacity to give students a hands-on approach
Students gain a hands-on approach of learning how to work with other students, parents and their surrounding community, while planting a seed in their minds to continue participating with Familyhood when they become alumni.
