Save the date: Next 1st Saturday’s is September 1st – volunteer at a school!

The first 1st Saturdays event of the new 2018/2019 school will be September 1st, 2018.

Last year, 1st Saturdays events were held at Oakland Tech High School and Skyline High School.

Our aim is to utilize one day a month to strengthening schools from within and this center to later improve its surrounding community. A vision we call Familyhood.

1stSaturdays is the official monthly volunteer and recruitment day to build Familyhood at every school site.

Familyhood is an inter-generational network which consists of mainly a schools Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Associations in collaboration.

If a school does not have these organizations functioning, part of the 1stSaturdays agenda would be dedicated to next steps in planning these organizations to start at a school site.

Thus far in Oakland, I mentioned above 1st Saturdays are being held at Oakland Tech high school and Skyline High School.

At Oakland Tech , we are primarily working with a science class and students from the class in building the school garden. We have had some PTA participation but yet to truly incorporate the Student Government.

At Skyline High School, 1stSaturdays is being used to fix up their performance arts center. These efforts are mostly driven by the PTA or/and parents involved with the Performance Arts committee. We have yet to to gain the support of the Student Government Association and Alumni. Although, some students and alumni are participating.

Our vision is to provide space for updates from each of these organizations.

The above is shared to share we have a long way to go and if you believe your school is not ready to start a 1stSaturdays, because your PTA is not meeting, or because your school’s Student Government is not truly functioning, your wrong.

Get started today!
We look forward to sharing the vision of your schools Familyhood!

Before I let you go, I would like to announce our adoption of utilizing gravel to grow food as an alternative to soil. As you know, Familyhood is driven by two motto’s. 1) Every school shall have a functioning SGA, PTA and ALumni abd 2) “every school shall have a garden, a farmers market and grocery store.”

We are recommending the book River Stones Grow Food by Richard Campbell and his methods of utilizing gravel instead of soil within the garden phase of our program.

The link to purchase the book is here

Enjoy the rest of your Summer!

We look forward to seeing you in the new school year!
