“The vision called Familyhood kicks off in 2024 with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s Day of Service on January 15th, 2024 and every 1st Saturday of the month starting February 3rd, 2024
MLK Day of Service is one day a year thousands, if not millions gather and volunteer on projects in their community.
What if, in addition to one day a year, we volunteered one day a month?
The first Saturday of every month, is that one day a month 1stSaturdays.com promotes.
What if we tied these monthly events into a school/community-wide vision?
This vision is what we call Familyhood.
Familyhood is driven by two mottoes:
1) “Every school shall have a functioning Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association”. One of the long-term goals of Familyhood is to grow these school-based organizations. Each month, through 1st Saturdays, time should be set aside to hear from each organization and/or where the school is in starting an organization that may not be functioning.
2) “Every school shall have a garden, a farmers market and a grocery store.” Another long-term goal of Familyhood is to utilize these school-based, food-related projects as projects all the generations can work on and grow with. Together, they start with the school garden, increase membership in the school -based organizations to add the farmers market as a project, to Increase in membership with more experience to plan and operate a school-based grocery store.
Both motto’s, use the word “every” because today, some school’s have them and some do not.
