Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was born on January the 15th, 1929. This coming January the 15th, he would be 93 years old. In his memory of service to humanity, his birthday is a national holiday and for many a day of service, on the following Monday. This, 2022, MLK Day of Service will be held on January 17th, 2022.
Thousands, if not millions of individuals throughout the United States will volunteer on this MLK Day of Service. The question, we raised was: can we keep people engaged to keep the projects they started on MLK Day of Service alive and beneficial to the community as a whole?
The answer is yes. The strategy is 1st Saturdays. The vision for the community, as a whole is Familyhood.

What is 1st Saturdays? 1st Saturdays is the official monthly volunteer/ recruitment day at schools.
1st Saturdays declares MLK Day of Service as the beginning day for volunteering for the year. After MLK Day of Service, 1st Saturdays.com promotes volunteers to return to the same projects they started on MLK Day of Service on the 1st Saturday of each month. Therefore, the annual 2022 calendar looks like this: Jan 17 – MLK Day, Feb 5 – 1st Sat, March 5-1st Sat, April 2-1st Sat, May 7-1st Sat, Jun – 1st Sat, Jul 2nd-1st Sat, Aug 6-1st Sat, Sep 3-1st Sat, Oct 1-1st Sat, Nov 5-1st Sat, Dec 3-1st Sat.

1st Saturdays focuses on schools with a vision of promoting governance from within the school to utilize 1st Saturdays and other strategies to increase the schools inter-generational voice.

Familyhood is driven by two motto’s: 1) every school shall have a functioning Student Government Association, Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association. 2) every school shall have a garden, a farmers market and a grocery store.

By the motto: 1 organizations functioning on campus, the school is able to create the inter-generational voice and body we call Familyhood. The above is in theory.

In practice, 20 people show up to volunteer  on MlK – Day of Service. 10 parents, 5 students and 5 Alumni. On Feb 5th, 30 people show up, 1  student representing the Student Government Association, 1 parent representing the schools parent organization and since the school didn’t have an Alumni Association, no one yet to represent. But 28 others including parents, students, teaches and community partners. In practice, 1st Saturdays is different at every school. We suggest to use it to strengthen the school through community service and increased governance from within the school.

Kind regards,

David N. Roach
