Lowell Park -Urban Farm/ Market
A portion of Lowell Park will be dedicated to an urban farm and market. 1stSaturdays is a monthly volunteer day to remind the community to come out and be apart of this project. We want it to be community owned and operated. Come share your thoughts and muscles!

Urban Farm/Market
Meet at 8:00 am- 11:00 a.m. at Lowell Park.
Participating organizations were:

City of Oakland Parks and Recreation Offers a wide variety of recreational programming for all ages—we especially encourage youth to make safe and healthy choices that deter criminal behavior in East, West and Central Oakland– with something for everyone!

City Girl Farms is an urban agriculture private enterprise. We cultivate organic heirloom vegetables and raise dairy goats, chickens, ducks, rabbits and honey bees on farms in the inner-city.

The Familyhood Connection Inc aka Mo’ Better Food presents 1stSaturdays.com as the official monthly volunteer day to advance communities towards building Healthy Economics.

11:00 – 3:00 p.m. Also at Lowell Park,  on November 2nd, the 1st Saturday’s Community Fair and Farmers Market was held. Several organizations including:
The West Oakland Family Resource Center provides families a place where they can safely access information through variety of activities. Free cooking classes, health education classes, legal services workshops, and free resources such as food and clothing are a few of the things the West Oakland Family Resource Center has to offer the community.

OUSD Central Family Resource Center and East Bay Agency for Children will provide screening for enrollment in social service programs including Medi-Cal and Food Stamps, and can make families an appointment to get signed up.

The City-County Neighborhood Initiative is pleased to help facilitate this and other efforts to build community and help Oakland residents develop tools to lead safe, healthy lives.

West Oakland Middle School Health Center dentists and physicians will take a look at your family’s teeth, answer your questions about dental health, and connect you to the dental services you may need so that everyone in your family has a healthy smile.

LifeLong Medical Care, a non-profit Federally Qualified Health Center serving in Alameda, Contra Costa, and Marin Counties, will offer education on and screenings for Medi-Cal, HealthPAC, Covered California and CalFresh.

Alameda County Public Health Nursing works to promote and maintain wellness among Alameda County residents through offering a variety of services at homes, clinics, schools, and community centers. The Alameda County Public Health Nurses will be providing blood pressure checks and health education at this event.

Chef Robert Dorsey works with the Junior Chefs Society to create meaningful job opportunities for youth in the culinary industry. Today, he will be teaching lessons on how to cook easy, healthy meals with fresh local vegetables.

The mission of the Oakland Lacrosse Club is to use lacrosse to enrich the lives of Oakland youth by using the sport to promote physical and mental growth, increase opportunities, and highlight positive images and connections in the Oakland community.

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is a lifestyle modification program that helps people reduce their risk for type 2 diabetes by helping them learn about eating healthier, increasing physical activity and other behavior changes.

The West Coast Chess Alliance will facilitate chess instruction and will also facilitate a chess tournament.

Students from Hoover Elementary School will utilize knowledge from their gardening class to lead a workshop on growing kale trimmings. They will also be giving away potted plants for people to grow in their homes.
