The school year has officially begun here in Oakland, Ca and beyond. Which means, all the great work done in school gardens last year has suffered blows of summer heat and neglect. This is the typical pattern schools face the beginning of the school year.
1st Saturdays- The official monthly volunteer/recruitment day at school sites is designed to change this.
By enabling volunteers to come together one day a month-every 1st Saturday of the month, we believe we can not only keep school gardens maintained for the entire year but with an increase of volunteers, we can take the gardens to another level.
Taking school gardens to another level in 1st Saturdays term is to advance the garden to an actual school based enterprise. Which means mainly planned, operated and owned by the students of the school with the support of their PTA and Alumni. After working on these school enterprises as students, 1st Saturdays plants in the students mind to return as an alumni and assist the next generation.
